The Slug and Lettuce is part of a huge chain across the country, but mostly parts of London and the South East of England. It is located on the High Street meaning it is very accessible, and also very close to the taxi ranks and bus stops down the road. This means it facilitates to both students living off campus as well as those living on campus. The Fox and Fiddler

For St. Patrick’s Day, my friends and I ventured into town to celebrate; I had heard very good things about The Fox and Fiddler pub so we decided to check it out. It did not disappoint. The Fox and Fiddler was a great little pub. Near the centre of town it is really accessible and easy to find. The prices of drinks are usually very reasonable but they were especially good for St. Patrick’s day. There’s seating at the bar or very comfortable sofas and other seating areas all around the pub. Playhouse

playhouse       playhouse2

Playhouse Colchester is part of the Wetherspoon pub chain. However, it is very different from other Wetherspoon pubs. The building has undertaken many different changes; it was first an actual playhouse in 1929. In the 1930’s it transformed into a cinema, and then in 1981 it became a bingo hall. From there it remained an empty building until it was made into a pub in 1994. Because of these changes, they have kept the playhouse décor with the pub on the ground floor which is overlooked by the seating area covered with mannequins, puppets and cardboard cut-outs of famous people and other celebrities. There is even a private box for the royal family. Continue reading

Qube

Qube Boutique Bar and Nightclub is another one of Colchester’s great bars. Qube bar and grill is situated on Crouch street which serves food during the day and transforms into a club at night. At £7, the price of admittance was a little high for students, however the club more than makes up for it. The bar is well decorated with cosy booths, a long island bar and gives off a great night-life vibe. With two levels and an outside area, the bar is very spacious and has plenty of room for all your friends on a night out, or to hire out for V.I.P parties. They play different music on both floors so you can choose which floor you’d rather occupy. There is a long island bar on the ground floor which makes the bar more accessible. Although there is a bar on the top floor, it is smaller meaning there is sometimes a longer wait. There is an outside area available at the back of the club to cool down in or to smoke. Twisters

Twisters is a great little bar in Colchester and is located near the bottom of North Hill. Although the outside is painted blue, it is often overlooked. They describe themselves as an alternative bar and provide really good music and entertainment, from guest musicians to resident DJ’s, Twisters is not a club to be missed. It may be quite small, but it is an ideal place to start the night with a few drinks and cocktails. If chart music is not necessarily what you are after, Twisters is the perfect place to be as it offers alternative music and genres like Indie, Electro, Rock, Punk and others. Twisters is great for casual drinks with friends as there are many places to sit and chat with your drinks, as well as a dance floor and beer garden outside. It is a quirky little bar with really cool indie décor- the walls are covered with pictures of bands or album covers. Continue reading

Missoula Colchester is part of a chain of bars across the country. Missoula Colchester is located on Head Street in the town centre. It is a great bar that serves food and cocktails during the day, and transforms into a club at night. Missoula is a bar that my friends and I frequently occupy on nights out. It is usually about £3 for entry in the evenings before 12am. With a huge selection of drinks behind the bar, and a great menu of cocktails, you will never go thirsty on a night out. Missoula frequently entertain their guests with comedy nights and celebrity appearances, along with the usual DJ playing a variety of music. Continue reading

Waikiki

Last week for my friend’s birthday we visited Waikiki. Waikiki is Colchester’s only Tiki bar and is situated down Crouch Street in Colchester. I have been there a few times before and it is always a good night out. Entry on average is £5 and there is a good variety of drinks on offer at Waikiki at reasonable prices. The best part of Waikiki by far is the atmosphere and the décor. Being the only Tiki bar in Colchester, it really stands out from the other bars and clubs with its cool decoration and lighting. There is also a great variety of music played, so there’s usually something for everyone. Continue reading

Noodle Express

Untitled

This week I discovered a new Chinese takeaway place, at the bottom of St Boltoph’s street; Noodle Express. It is new to the street and has not disappointed! The food is made right in front of your eyes on a hot plate, so you know exactly what is happening to your food and where it is coming from. There is two bars to sit at if you do want to sit in and eat. The staff are very friendly and polite and cater to your needs well. With many menu options and combinations, it is an ideal place to go if you want something little for yourself, or a takeaway for a night in with friends. There are many options to order, from rice and noodle dishes, to sushi or soup. Continue reading
