For St. Patrick’s Day, my friends and I ventured into town to celebrate; I had heard very good things about The Fox and Fiddler pub so we decided to check it out. It did not disappoint. The Fox and Fiddler was a great little pub. Near the centre of town it is really accessible and easy to find. The prices of drinks are usually very reasonable but they were especially good for St. Patrick’s day. There’s seating at the bar or very comfortable sofas and other seating areas all around the pub. In the centre of the campus, Sub Zero is Essex University’s main scene for night life. Although it generally hosts many Essex students, it is also often open to guests. Guests are mainly accompanied by a student, however it is sometimes possible for normal guests to attend the nights out. Sub Zero not only plays host to many themed nights, like foam parties, paint parties, UV parties, and fancy dress themes, they also accommodate many guest acts. These have included acts from Pendulum, Redlight, Jaguar Skills, DJ Fresh, Wheatus, and many other guest DJ’s and groups. Often many very well known radio DJ’s like Tim Westwood, Jameela Jamil, Danny Howard, Zane Lowe to name a few. Other themed nights at the University club include Milk it! which has now been moved to the Student Union bar upstairs, Sports Fed, Flirt!, Unifi, and Super Sundays. Sub Zero accommodates for a variety of different music tastes and styles. Continue reading
Playhouse Colchester is part of the Wetherspoon pub chain. However, it is very different from other Wetherspoon pubs. The building has undertaken many different changes; it was first an actual playhouse in 1929. In the 1930’s it transformed into a cinema, and then in 1981 it became a bingo hall. From there it remained an empty building until it was made into a pub in 1994. Because of these changes, they have kept the playhouse décor with the pub on the ground floor which is overlooked by the seating area covered with mannequins, puppets and cardboard cut-outs of famous people and other celebrities. There is even a private box for the royal family. Continue reading
Qube Boutique Bar and Nightclub is another one of Colchester’s great bars. Qube bar and grill is situated on Crouch street which serves food during the day and transforms into a club at night. At £7, the price of admittance was a little high for students, however the club more than makes up for it. The bar is well decorated with cosy booths, a long island bar and gives off a great night-life vibe. With two levels and an outside area, the bar is very spacious and has plenty of room for all your friends on a night out, or to hire out for V.I.P parties. They play different music on both floors so you can choose which floor you’d rather occupy. There is a long island bar on the ground floor which makes the bar more accessible. Although there is a bar on the top floor, it is smaller meaning there is sometimes a longer wait. There is an outside area available at the back of the club to cool down in or to smoke. Missoula Colchester is part of a chain of bars across the country. Missoula Colchester is located on Head Street in the town centre. It is a great bar that serves food and cocktails during the day, and transforms into a club at night. Missoula is a bar that my friends and I frequently occupy on nights out. It is usually about £3 for entry in the evenings before 12am. With a huge selection of drinks behind the bar, and a great menu of cocktails, you will never go thirsty on a night out. Missoula frequently entertain their guests with comedy nights and celebrity appearances, along with the usual DJ playing a variety of music. Continue reading
This week I discovered a new Chinese takeaway place, at the bottom of St Boltoph’s street; Noodle Express. It is new to the street and has not disappointed! The food is made right in front of your eyes on a hot plate, so you know exactly what is happening to your food and where it is coming from. There is two bars to sit at if you do want to sit in and eat. The staff are very friendly and polite and cater to your needs well. With many menu options and combinations, it is an ideal place to go if you want something little for yourself, or a takeaway for a night in with friends. There are many options to order, from rice and noodle dishes, to sushi or soup. Continue reading
